Hanging curtains give a bedroom a cozy and warm feeling. They help maintain a certain amount of privacy among roommates. However, this does not mean that they should be used every time. Hanging screens should only be used if needed for a specific reason. I use curtains because it adds character to the space and if you want to give the room a cozy feeling you need to know how to hang curtains in a dorm room.
There are only two ways to hang curtains in a dormitory room. For one option you need to attach the screen rod to the wall using screws, the other option uses a velcro strap. When you choose the second option, the velcro strips allow you to place the screens at any height without the need for additional hardware.
When you want to hang a curtain in a room, you first need to measure the place where you want to hang your curtain rod. After getting your measurements, you can proceed to find your desired screen rod. After that, you can choose whether to install the rod on the ceiling or wall.
The length of curtain rods varies from 18 inches to 42 inches depending on where they are located and their purpose. An ideal length is 24 inches. If you are looking to hang two sets of screens on a single rod, measure the width of both panels. The ideal width for panel screens is 54 inches. This gives you a total width of 78 inches.
If you want to hang a curtain on a rod attached to the wall, measure the distance between the walls and determine what size curtain you want to hang. Again, this varies based on location, but we recommend 84 inches.
Choose The Method.
There are different methods you can choose when hanging the screen. A pole pocket allows you to hang curtains using binder clips without holes in the wall. Another option is to install a track instead and attach binder clips along the track. You may want to consider installing a screen rod instead of the traditional screen ring. A hole in the wall needs to drill in the curtain ring method.
So first, you need to decide where to hang the screen rod and then decide what type of screen rod to use. There are different types of rods but they all serve the same purpose. They attach to the top edge of the window and hold the draperies’ fabric tight.
Materials
You can choose any fabric or material you like. However, keep in mind that the fabric that is too light can pass through the light and the fabric that is too heavy can hang. The screen often has a lining called fusible interfacing, which is sewn to the back of the fabric. Fusible interfaces can be used to make the fabric stable and strong.
Another option is to add weights or plates to the hemline of your screen. This helps prevent the fabric from sagging and allows you to adjust the tension of your curtains so that they stay straight when closed.
Required supplies are a screen rod, screen ring, screen hook, and screen drape (optional).
Measure The Room
Start this project by measuring the space you need to work with. Do this using a tape measure to measure across the width of the window frame. This measurement should be about 25 inches. Now add again the amount of space taken up by the screen rod and the pole used for hanging the screen. This amount should subtract from the total measurement. You need to have enough space for your screen after subtracting both spaces together.
Make sure you consider any potential obstacles that may be present and remove them if necessary before taking measurements. Next, determine the height of the windowsill at its highest point. Make sure that this measurement is taken from the floor to the top of the window seal and does not include the thickness of the seal.
Finally, estimate the amount of space between the window and the wall. It needs to be large enough to accommodate the width of the screen without hitting the wall.
Measure The Windows
Where do you want to mount the screen rod on the wall? Do fix at least two feet away from any existing window frame or window seal. Next, determine where the bottom edge of the curtains will keep on the floor.
Then measure the length of the fabric you plan to use from top to bottom. Next, mark the height of the wall where the curtains will hang. Mark this point on either side of the window. You will then be able to determine how long the fabric needs.
Select The Rod
Once you have measured the dimensions of the room and determined your required size you should now select the appropriate type of screen rod. Most screen rods are sold in pairs. But sometimes you can find a single screen rod or even multiple. However, make sure you are buying a quality rod that will last.
Look for the construction of a sturdy metal tube and the desired one. You will want to make sure that the rod is compatible with the fabric useable. Curtain fabrics are available in a variety of materials, from natural fibers. As nylon and polyester, they all have advantages and disadvantages. Consider factors such as weight and price when choosing the best material.
Curtain Rhodes
The best rod for hanging curtains is the one that has hooks on both ends. This allows you to remove the rod from the wall without cutting it into the fabric. However, a hanger rod can work better if you want to change the screen in a while. The hangers have a hook that goes through the middle of the screen and is attached to the rod. Then you tie the curtain ropes together.
Buy Curtains
Curtains should be purchased at your local department store or even your home improvement store. Available in different colors and styles. Choose something that matches the color of your room.
The curtains are usually hung in four sets and you choose the color depending on your mood. Neutral colors are good for any room in the house, while dark colors give a sharp vibe.
Special care should be taken when buying curtains if you want to know how to hang curtains in a dorm room.
Window Treatment
You may be able to hang a valance for a large dorm window. Valences add some texture to the window and add a decorative touch.
Determine The Level Of Fabric
If you want a complete drape, cut two pieces of fabric that are at least twice as wide as the window. To create a partial or valance drape, cut a piece of cloth half as wide as the window and double the rest of the fabric. When picking clothes, look to move horizontally rather than vertically. This makes it easy to sew together, especially if you want to match the patterns.
Each layer of material should be cut into strips of equal size. Once you have measured how many layers you plan to use. Then place a sheet of fabric opposite the wall. Mark where you want to attach the end of the first part of the material. After that start attaching the rest of the fabric, overlapping by 1/4 inch or less.
Use Pins Or Clips
Pin some parts of your clothes so you can see where they keep. Once you have determined the placement, remove the pins and put the fabric in place. Finally, cut off any excess fabric.
For those times you don’t feel like hanging curtains from the wall, consider clipping them to the ceiling. This option works best for small screens. Just be sure to use clips that will not damage your window frame.
Cut The Fabric
2 pieces of fabric cut at least twice the size of your window. Use a table saw or round saw to cut the material into strips.
After choosing the type of screen rod you want to install, you need to cut the fabric to fit. Again, look for a pre-cut rod and make sure the fabric is long enough to cover the entire length of the rod. Once you secure the fabric over the rod make sure you secure it firmly using pins or clips.
Cut Each Piece Of Material At An Angular Angle
Once you have finished cutting the pieces of your fabric, then place each piece on one side before it. Hold this part tightly when using a straight edge to cut angular slits. Continue to alternate between placing each new fabric on the end side until the fabric strips are finished.
Sew The Seams Together
The two ends of each strip sew together along the long edge, leaving a 1/8 inch seam allowance. Flatten the bottom seams and press the folds using a standard method.
Attach The q Rod
If you decide to install rods on either side of the window frame, make sure there is enough space above and below where the screen rod will be placed. This will protect the screen from getting stuck on the ceiling fan blades, light fixtures, or sliding door tracks.
Note the distance between the bottom of the curtain rod. The floor should equal the height of the window frame and the amount of fabric needed to open the window.
Hang The Curtain Rod
Use the provided mounting hardware and hang the screen rods. Make sure the mounting brackets are securely installed to the wall studs. Once you have the correct placement, attach the rods according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Keep in mind that your screens will close off from the mounting brackets. The brackets should install below the level of the bottom edge of your rod.
Hanging a curtain from a wall is much easier than getting a curtain rod in place, especially if you have a small space. Most importantly, hanging curtains from a wall adds visual interest while preventing light from flowing through your windows. And if you want to add some privacy, consider covering the space between the curtain and the wall using a piece of fabric or draperies panel.
Install The Curtain Ring
By following the instructions install the screen rings given with the specific brand of the ring. To make sure the rings fit properly, first check the size of your window. Next, place a screen ring on top of the rod and then slide the second set of rings over the first one. Then check them to see if they match perfectly. If not, fix them until everything is OK.
Hanging Curtains
First-line up the top edge of the fabric with the bottom of the window frame and hang your curtains on the wall. Next, grab the center of the fabric and pull it straight down until it reaches the floor. Then fold the remaining ingredients in half and tie them in place with a standard cloth. Repeat this process for the four sides of the window.
